Maggie Harris is a poet and author who has lectured at Southampton University and has performed her work across the UK, Europe and the Caribbean. She is director of Inscribing the Island Literature in Thanet. Her latest work is Kiskadee Girl, a memoir.

The Workshops

There will be four workshops progressing from practical advice and writing exercises to work on structure and development, including tips on editing, getting published and marketing.

  1. For Love or Money: This workshop will offer you practical advice whether you want to write for pleasure or commercially, and is suitable for writers at any stage of their writing. What are publishers looking for? What other opportunities are there? Can I just write for myself? You will have the opportunity to take part in writing exercises and work with both tutors who will share their experience and advice.
  2. Writing for Pleasure & Profit If your New Year's resolution is to write a book, then this is for you. How do you begin to move your ideas forward? Can you just go with the flow? How much do you need to plan before you start writing? Should you be even thinking about publication? Bring your ideas along and we will help you begin or re-focus on the process.
  3. Keeping Your Writing Going: Practical steps to help you work through writers block. Strategies to keep yourself motivated and disciplined. With creative and surprising methods designed to stimulate your ideas and your writing. Opportunities to share and discuss the way ahead.
  4. I've written a Book, What Now? You've done the work, you have a novel, your life story, a collection of poetry or short stories. Where do you send it? Do you need an agent? What can you expect? What will you get paid? Practical advice on writing a synopsis and a covering letter. How to present yourself and your manuscript and much more…
